Local Produce

This blog includes a few more details about the Local Produce idea I came up with earlier this year, after making a few enquiries around the area I have managed to secure a visit to Quickes Cheese Factory in Newton St Cyres near Exeter, which would help me to explore my idea of seeing how local produce is made, and then making a photo documentary of the making process on site.

This was my original e-mail which I sent to Quickes, followed by the communication between me, Mary Quicke and Malcolm at Quickes:

Dear sirs
I am writing to you to ask if I may attend the Quickes cheese factory to take several photographs for an upcoming photography project I am carrying out for my Degree at Plymouth College of Art.
I am a student at the college and have a particular interest in local produce and have seen Quickes products at many of the markets I have visited within the last several years.
Just to give a little bit of background to my proposal or idea; I would really be looking to visit the factory and take several photos which show how the cheese is made and what processes are in place between raw material collection and also how the final product is prepared for sale, so the photography study could be considered a 'photo story' or a case study but presented in photographs.
I would welcome any opportunity to come and visit and perhaps talk about possible plans for the photography.
I'm free to visit at most points during the week.
Thanks for your time,
Matt Thorne

Hi Malcolm
That's excellent, if I could plan to make the visit on the 13th of March that would be perfect.
I can come at anytime during the day but would expect that I ll need a few hours perhaps to get the shots done.
If I get some free time towards the end of the week, it would also be nice to just come and 'recce' the situation, see what lighting I need and grab a few minutes of your time perhaps to talk through some possible photos.
But Friday 13th would be great,
thanks, Matt

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

The timescale for my project is that it is due during May towards about the middle of May, I need to have final images pretty much ready to present, so I would be looking to shoot say in March really, to be on the safe side, but I can understand that you guys are busy so if it isn't convenient we could come to some other arrangement if possible?

Thanks, Matt

Mary Quicke

Hi matt

What is your timescale on this?

We are coming up to our busiest time of year, so it gets more difficult till May or June – can it wait till then?

Best wishes

Mary
